Nagoya:South Korea's Jang Se-yun secured a silver medal in the women's -52-kilogram judo event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, marking the country's first judo medal at the Games.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Jang was defeated by Sita Kadamboeva of Uzbekistan in the final at the Aichi International Arena in central Japan. The match was decided by hansoku-make, or disqualification, after Jang received a third shido, or yellow card, during sudden-death overtime.
Jang's journey to the final included victories in her round-of-16 and quarterfinal matches, both won by ippon. In the semifinals, she faced Japan's Kokoro Fujishiro, advancing to the final after Fujishiro was penalized with a third shido in overtime. This marked Jang's first win against Fujishiro in their four encounters.
In the final, both Jang and Kadamboeva accumulated two shidos each during regulation time. However, Jang's third shido in the overtime period resulted in her disqualification, awarding the gold medal to Kadamboeva.
Despite her disappointment, Jang expressed hope that the silver medal would motivate her for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. She reflected on her performance, acknowledging the need to improve against strong opponents like Kadamboeva, who has a strong record in international competitions.
