Seoul: Ewha Hakdang, established in 1914 as Korea's first educational institute for women, marked a significant milestone by founding the country's first modern kindergarten. This move set the stage for advancing women's education in Korea.
According to Yonhap News Agency, in 1946, Rhee Syng-man, a staunch advocate for Korean independence, voiced his opposition to Korea being placed under a five-year U.N. supervised trusteeship. This was in response to the aftermath of Japan's colonial rule over Korea from 1910 to 1945. Rhee later became South Korea's first president in 1948.
In a secret pact signed in 1949, South Korea and Japan agreed on the return of cultural properties that had been looted during Japan's colonial occupation. Meanwhile, in 1950, the Japanese government enacted a decree mandating 620,000 ethnic Koreans residing in Japan to register with the authorities.
Fast forward to 2004, South Korea responded positively to North Korea's proposal to freeze its nuclear program, signaling a potential thaw in inter-Korean relations. However, in 2008, tragedy struck in the city of Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, when a fire at a cold storage warehouse under construction claimed the lives of 40 workers.
In a diplomatic development in 2013, former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Google Chairman Eric Schmidt visited North Korea, despite the U.S. government's reservations about the timing of the visit.
Most recently, in 2025, the Seoul Western District Court granted an extension of a warrant for the detention of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. This came after the previous warrant expired and investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials faced obstruction from presidential security personnel while attempting to execute the warrant at Yoon's residence.
