Seoul:Prime Minister Han Seong-sook emphasized the need for South Korea to persist in demanding an apology from North Korea following a land mine blast at the border, which resulted in serious injuries to South Korean soldiers.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the explosion occurred on September 21 and has been attributed to land mines deliberately planted by North Korea on the South's side of the Military Demarcation Line. The incident injured three South Korean soldiers, with one officer losing an ankle. North Korea has denied any involvement, calling the accusations fabricated and threatening retaliation if South Korea takes further action.
During a meeting with reporters, marking her 100th day in office, Han stated that it is essential for North Korea to apologize, given the evidence of their responsibility in the incident. Han, who was deeply shocked by the blast, noted the immediate concerns were the condition and recovery of the injured soldiers, with broader security responses being handled by the defense ministry and National Security Office.
Han, who became Prime Minister on July 1 after serving as minister of small and medium-sized enterprises and startups, has focused on initiatives for national transformation through technology, alongside addressing industrial accidents, suicides, and housing supply. She also commented on the ongoing debate over the appointment powers between the president and the Supreme Court chief justice, suggesting a need for clearer definitions of their respective rights.
Furthermore, Han pledged to support the development of the Serious Crime Investigation Agency and the Prosecution Service, aiming to reform the police and enhance public trust in their investigative capabilities.
