Hawaii: Hwang You-min, a 22-year-old South Korean golfer, achieved a significant milestone by winning the Lotte Championship in Hawaii, thereby securing her LPGA Tour card. This victory allows her to bypass the grueling qualifying tournament, the Q-Series, and either join the LPGA immediately or defer her membership to the start of the 2026 season.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Hwang, who has been a full-time player on the Korea LPGA Tour since 2023, has long aspired to play on the LPGA Tour. Her triumph in Hawaii marks the realization of that dream. Hwang clinched the title with a 17-under 271, finishing one stroke ahead of her mentor and fellow Korean player Kim Hyo-joo. Despite briefly trailing on the back nine, Hwang made a remarkable comeback with four consecutive birdies, finishing with a five-under 67 on the final day.
Hwang’s performance was particularly notable on the par-5 18th hole, where her long hitting ability proved advantageous. She chose to go for the green in two shots, ultimately setting up an easy birdie that secured her victory. Reflecting on her aggressive play, Hwang mentioned that her decision to aim for the green was a calculated risk taken only on the final hole.
Throughout the tournament, Hwang displayed exceptional skill, particularly during a blistering second round where she scored a 10-under 62, featuring nine birdies and an eagle. This strong performance shifted her mindset, making her believe in her potential to win the championship.
Although Hwang has yet to decide whether she will immediately join the LPGA Tour or wait until 2026, her victory places her among a distinguished group of Korean golfers who have gained LPGA membership by winning as nonmembers. Hwang aspires to leave a lasting legacy in the sport, emphasizing her enjoyment of the game.
