Gifu: The South Korean men's and women's field hockey teams both secured victories in their opening matches of the Asian Games held on Friday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the men's team achieved a decisive 5-0 victory against Bangladesh in their Pool A match at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium, located approximately 30 kilometers north of the main host city of Nagoya. The goals were scored by Sim Jae-won, Lee Gang-san, Oh Se-yong, Bae Soung-min, and Yang Ji-hun. South Korea dominated the second quarter with three goals and added one goal in each of the subsequent quarters.

South Korea's head coach, Min Tae-seok, stated, "We saw Bangladesh as a dark horse. We wanted to lock things down defensively in the first quarter. And then we wanted to be more aggressive in the second quarter. And our players scored those goals after making their adjustments to the venue."

In the women's Pool A match, South Korea triumphed over Chinese Taipei with a 3-1 scoreline at the same venue. Park Seung-ae scored two goals, while An Su-jin added another to secure the win.

During the previous Asian Games in 2023, South Korea claimed bronze in the men's event and silver in the women's event. Both tournaments follow the same format, with 12 teams divided into two groups of six. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals.

The upcoming matches will see the South Korean men's team face Indonesia at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, while the women's team will compete against Kazakhstan at 9 a.m. on Monday.
