Seoul: A South Korean activist has embarked on a journey to the Gaza Strip, defying a government-imposed travel ban on the region, marking the second such incident this year, officials reported Sunday. Kim Dong-hyeon, known for his pro-Palestinian activism, departed for Gaza on Friday aboard the Kyriakos X, a vessel that is part of a humanitarian flotilla, as confirmed by the foreign ministry and a civic group supporting Palestinian liberation.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the foreign ministry has indicated plans to collaborate with Israeli and other relevant authorities to ensure the safety of Kim Dong-hyeon. The South Korean government has strict regulations prohibiting its citizens from traveling to or residing in the Gaza Strip without prior approval. Violations of this ban can lead to penalties, including up to one year of imprisonment or fines amounting to 10 million won (approximately US$6,800), as stipulated by the Passport Act.
This incident follows a similar case earlier this month involving another activist, Kim Ah-hyun, who attempted to enter Gaza despite the government's revocation of her passport due to a previous unauthorized entry attempt. The South Korean authorities continue to monitor such activities closely, emphasizing the importance of adhering to travel restrictions for the safety and security of its citizens.
