South Korea Urged to Demand Apology from North Korea After DMZ Land Mine Incident

Seoul:A recent land mine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) has highlighted the need for principled actions and vigilance. The incident, which injured three soldiers from the Republic of Korea Army's 25th Infantry Division, has raised questions about North Korea's military activities along the border.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the explosion occurred on September 21 during a military survey near the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) aimed at detecting mines and planning new patrol routes. The South Korean military has since stated that it is "highly likely" the blast was caused by North Korean land mines.

The investigation into the explosion began six days after the incident, drawing criticism for the delayed response. The South Korean military and the United Nations Command (UNC) are urged to thoroughly investigate both the cause of the explosion and North Korea's recent fortifications in the DMZ.

The incident has reignited calls for North Korea to issue an apology, with some comparing the current response to a similar incident in 2015 under the Park Geun-hye administration. At that time, a prompt investigation was conducted, and North Korea was asked to apologize.

Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul has labeled the planting of mines as a "clear violation of the armistice," indicating that South Korea will take appropriate measures. The government and military have been criticized for their handling of the situation, with calls for clear communication and better preparation to prevent future incidents.

Questions have been raised about whether the timing of President Lee Jae Myung's speech at the U.N. General Assembly affected the investigation's delay, though Cheong Wa Dae has denied any connection. Despite the challenges, the Lee administration continues to support a phased engagement approach with North Korea, advocating for easing sanctions in exchange for halting nuclear programs.
