South Korea Unveils Largest Virtual Studio for Film and TV

Daejeon: South Korea on Wednesday unveiled its largest virtual production studio, a high-tech filming space that allows special effects to be created instantly on set, marking a new step in the country's bid to strengthen its digital content industry.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced the opening of the new Virtual Studio at Studio Cube in Daejeon, located approximately 140 kilometers southeast of Seoul. This facility combines live-action filming with computer-generated imagery through a massive LED screen and real-time 3D graphics technology.

The studio is equipped with an LED wall measuring 60 meters in length and 8 meters in height, which enables filmmakers to shoot immersive, three-dimensional scenes. The virtual background dynamically reacts to camera movements, enhancing the filming process.

During a demonstration at the opening ceremony, officials showcased "in-camera VFX" technology. This innovative technology synchronizes special effects with live camera footage, allowing finished scenes to appear instantly without the need for post-production editing.

The ministry plans to run two pilot programs in December and next March to support filmmakers and drama producers in testing the facility. "We expect local production companies to use this advanced infrastructure to create world-class content for the global market," stated First Vice Culture Minister Kim Young-soo in a release.
