Seoul: South Korea is poised to sign an additional agreement to export K2 tanks to Poland, potentially as early as next month, according to government officials.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the proposed contract, valued at 9 trillion won (approximately US$6.2 billion), involves the export of 180 more K2 tanks to Poland. This follows a previous agreement signed in July 2022, where South Korea committed to delivering K2 tanks, K9 self-propelled howitzers, FA-50 light attack aircraft, and Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers to the European nation.
The initial contract, signed in August 2022, was worth $12.4 billion and included the shipment of 180 K2 tanks, 212 K9 howitzers, and 48 FA-50 jets to Poland. Efforts have since been underway to secure the exportation of another batch of K2 tanks.
The conclusion of the latest arms deal was anticipated last year but faced delays due to disagreements between the Polish government and a local company over the specifics of the deal. Additionally, political instability in South Korea, following a brief martial law declaration by the impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol on December 3, contributed to the postponement.
During a bilateral meeting of foreign ministers in Warsaw last week, both sides committed to providing full support to promptly finalize the second round of contracts for Seoul's military exports. This move aims to further enhance defense collaboration between the two countries.
