South Korea To Develop Its Own ChatGPT With Government Support

Seoul: South Korea will strive to create its own version of ChatGPT, the AI chatbot developed by U.S.-based OpenAI, as announced by acting President Choi Sang-mok. He pledged comprehensive government backing for research and development in this field.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Choi made these comments during a high-level committee meeting, which was designed to help South Korea become one of the top three AI powerhouses globally. The committee's purpose is to encourage collaboration between the government and the private sector.

Choi highlighted that the global AI competition has entered a new stage, with leading AI nations declaring significant investments in AI infrastructure. He cited DeepSeek, a large-scale AI model from a Chinese startup, as both a challenge and an opportunity for South Korea, which is currently behind in the sector.

He reiterated the government's commitment to supporting the creation of world-class AI models. To enhance AI capabilities, the government plans to acquire 10,000 high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) by the end of the year. By the end of 2023, South Korea possessed around 2,000 GPUs, which are essential for AI development.

Choi further stated that the government would offer extensive GPU resources and research funding to secure the nation's position as a leader in AI innovation.
