South Korea to Accuse North Korea of Armistice Violation After DMZ Blast

Seoul:South Korea is aiming to officially declare North Korea's recent actions at the border as a breach of the Armistice Agreement. This follows a joint investigation with the United Nations Command, as stated by the defense ministry.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the decision comes as South Korea considers countermeasures after concluding that North Korea deliberately planted land mines on the southern side of the Military Demarcation Line. This incident on September 21 resulted in a blast that injured three South Korean soldiers, two of them seriously.

Seoul has previously stated that North Korea's apparent intrusion and mine-laying activities south of the MDL are clear violations of the ceasefire agreement that ended the 1950-53 Korean War. In a document submitted to lawmakers for an annual parliamentary audit, the ministry indicated its plans to formalize the armistice violations and demand an immediate cessation of border breaches. Additionally, they seek to restore the demilitarized zone to its original condition.

The ministry also mentioned efforts to initiate inter-Korean military talks to prevent future accidental clashes. These discussions aim to reopen communication hotlines and realign the MDL markers along the DMZ.
