Jindo: Rescuers in South Korea have successfully saved all 267 people aboard a passenger ferry that ran aground near the southwestern tip of the peninsula. The 26,000-tonne vessel, traveling from Jeju Island to Mokpo port, hit a small rocky island near Jindo Island. Onboard were 246 passengers and 21 crew members.

According to Deutsche Welle, the coast guard mobilized approximately 20 vessels and a plane to carry out the rescue operation. Five passengers sustained injuries from the impact of the grounding. The Coast Guard has indicated that human error may have been a factor in the accident, though a full investigation is currently in progress, as stated by Commissioner General Kim Yong-jin.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who was on a state visit to the United Arab Emirates, called for real-time updates on the rescue operation. Jeju Island, located around 80 kilometers south of the Korean Peninsula, is a popular holiday destination known for the Hallasan volcano and its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The location of the grounding is near the site of the tragic Sewol ferry sinking in 2014, which resulted in over 300 fatalities.
