Seoul: South Korea is in discussions with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding a potential visit by the agency's chief, a foreign ministry official announced. This move comes as Seoul continues its efforts to acquire nuclear-powered attack submarines.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the talks involve the possibility of IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi visiting South Korea, although the exact date for the visit has not yet been set. Local media reports suggest that Grossi may visit Seoul as early as next month.

The South Korean official emphasized the country's intention to cooperate with the IAEA while maintaining close communication with the United States. "Grossi's potential visit is also under discussion for initial talks on nuclear fuel inspections," the official noted.

The pursuit of nuclear-powered submarines by South Korea is part of agreements made during last year's summit with the United States, which committed to supporting Seoul's efforts in this area. This process necessitates South Korea signing a separate agreement with the IAEA to comply with inspection requirements and other safeguards, alongside a deal with Washington.

Meanwhile, follow-up actions to implement the security commitments from the summit agreements have yet to commence between South Korea and the U.S. Seoul is keen on an early visit by a U.S. delegation to expedite negotiations.
