Lima: The chief of South Korea's arms procurement agency, Seok Jong-gun, has engaged in discussions with Peru's Defense Minister Walter Astudillo to explore avenues for enhancing cooperation in the arms industry across land, sea, and air domains, as reported by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) on Monday. According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting took place in Lima on Saturday, coinciding with President Yoon Suk Yeol's visit to Peru for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. In a separate summit alongside the APEC gathering, President Yoon and his Peruvian counterpart, Dina Boluarte, committed to bolstering collaboration in the defense and mineral sectors. Both leaders praised the defense partnership as a pivotal step in advancing their comprehensive strategic relationship. During the ministerial discussions, Seok reiterated Seoul's commitment to facilitating the implementation of arms deals, including naval vessels and armored vehicles constructed by South Korean defens e companies, while also exploring potential additional agreements. Notably, in April, South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries signed a $460 million contract to collaboratively build four warships for the Peruvian Navy with a local shipyard. This was followed by a $60 million agreement involving Hyundai Rotem and STX to deliver 30 units of armored vehicles. Seok further provided an update to Astudillo on South Korea's domestically developed KF-21 fighter jet and Surion utility helicopter, underscoring the nation's advanced capabilities in defense technology.
