Seoul: The foreign ministry announced the appointment of world-renowned soprano Sumi Jo as a cultural cooperation ambassador to support the global expansion of K-culture.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the position is an external-title ambassador post, where individuals with expertise and public recognition are granted the title to aid in the government's diplomatic activities for a one-year term. The ministry expressed that Ambassador Jo is anticipated to support the 'K-Initiative' and the global expansion of K-culture by enhancing understanding of Korea's public and cultural diplomacy policies. She will also engage in outreach to stakeholders in both public and private sectors.
Sumi Jo, a Grammy-winning artist, is recognized as a prominent figure in global classical music and celebrates the 40th anniversary of her international debut this year. Her previous roles include serving as a public relations ambassador for the Korea-Japan World Cup, a cultural public diplomacy envoy for the ministry, and a promotional ambassador for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
In addition to Jo's appointment, the ministry named Lee Seong-hoon, a professor at Sungkonghoe University, as ambassador for human rights, peace, and democracy. The ministry noted that Lee is expected to enhance the government's involvement in international discussions on human rights, peace, and democracy. His role will include attending relevant international conferences, such as the UN Human Rights Council, and strengthening cooperation networks with like-minded countries and international civil society.
