Son Heung-min Announces Departure from Tottenham After 10 Years

Seoul: Tottenham Hotspur's South Korean captain Son Heung-min has announced his decision to leave the Premier League club this summer, marking the end of a decade-long tenure with the team. Son described the decision as "one of the toughest" of his football career during a press conference held in Seoul, ahead of Tottenham's preseason match against Newcastle United.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Son, who is entering the final year of his contract with Tottenham, has been the subject of extensive transfer speculation. Reports have linked him with a move to Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer, as well as clubs in the Saudi Pro League. However, Son refrained from disclosing his next destination or confirming if Sunday's match would be his last for Tottenham, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the upcoming game.

Son mentioned that his future plans would revolve around preparing for next year's FIFA World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The 33-year-old expressed his desire to be in an environment that would allow him to fully commit to what might be his final World Cup.

Joining Tottenham in August 2015, Son has made a significant impact, scoring 173 goals in all competitions and becoming the only Asian player to win the Premier League Golden Boot. Last season, he led Spurs to a UEFA Europa League title, a milestone that influenced his decision to leave.

Reflecting on his journey, Son stated, "I think I've given this team my everything every single day." He expressed the need for a new environment to challenge himself further, acknowledging the emotional difficulty of leaving a club that has been his home for a decade.

Son revealed that he had informed his teammates of his decision, noting their disappointment but understanding. His departure also comes as a new chapter begins for Tottenham's young South Korean player, Yang Min-hyeok, whom Son praised for his potential and prospects.

Spurs head coach Thomas Frank, who recently took charge, expressed his admiration for Son, labeling him a "Spurs legend." Frank confirmed that Son would captain the team in the upcoming match in Seoul, potentially marking a poignant farewell in his home country.

As Son prepares to bid farewell to the club and its fans, he remains committed to enjoying his remaining time in Korea and looks forward to the new challenges ahead.
