Seoul: SK hynix Inc. has announced its decision to purchase advanced production equipment valued at 12 trillion won (US$7.9 billion) from ASML, a Netherlands-based company, as part of its strategy to meet the increasing demand for memory chips. The South Korean chipmaker revealed this decision through a regulatory filing, stating that the equipment, comprising extreme ultraviolet (EUV) scanners, will be supplied by December 2027 to support its next-generation production processes.

According to Yonhap News Agency, this acquisition is aligned with SK hynix's initiative to enhance the production of memory chips, such as high bandwidth memory (HBM), driven by the rising demand from the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. The company aims to utilize the new EUV scanners to expedite its transition to sixth-generation process technology, thereby expanding its AI-focused memory offerings.

An official from SK hynix emphasized the company's goal to address the surging global demand for memory and to reinforce its market leadership. This strategic move underscores the company's commitment to advancing its technology infrastructure and solidifying its position in the rapidly growing AI sector.
