Seoul: Singer-actress Choi Soo-young expressed her desire to portray a character that defies predictability in the upcoming comedy action film "Okay! Madam 2," highlighting the limited presence of female villains in Korean cinema.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Choi has been cast as Anya in the sequel to the 2020 hit "Okay! Madam." The original film featured Uhm Jung-hwa and Park Sung-woong as a family on their first international trip, which quickly turns chaotic due to terrorists on their flight. The sequel shifts the setting to a cruise ship, adding new characters, including Choi as Anya, a criminal ring leader, along with Ryeoun as a ship magician and Choi Jin-joo as Sun-a, the tour company chief.
Choi shared at a press conference, "While there seem to be quite many female villain roles, there are not," emphasizing her excitement about the role and her intention to create a non-clich© character. She aimed to infuse Anya with charisma and humor, collaborating closely with the director to shape her character.
Director Lee Cheol-ha confirmed Choi was his top choice for the role, praising the chemistry between her and Uhm Jung-hwa, both of whom have roots in music. Uhm, reprising her role as former secret agent Mi-young, expressed her increased enthusiasm for action scenes in the sequel, noting the unity among the cast during filming.
Reflecting on the sequel's production, cast members shared their joy in reuniting and hinted at the possibility of another sequel. Park Sung-woong joked about expanding the setting to a submarine or spaceship, while Bae Jung-nam suggested filming overseas, potentially on the Eurostar train.
"Okay! Madam 2" is scheduled for release on August 12.
