Seoul: South Korea's unification ministry announced Wednesday that it has detected preliminary signs indicating that North Korea and Russia are initiating the construction of a road bridge across the Tumen River, a move marking the deepening of cooperation between the two nations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the plans for the bridge were formalized in June last year when both countries agreed to commence the construction of the motorway bridge, with a targeted completion by the end of 2026. This agreement was part of a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty signed by the leaders of North Korea and Russia to enhance cooperation.

Recent satellite imagery, dated Tuesday, revealed preparations on both sides for a ceremony to mark the commencement of the bridge's construction. The unification ministry noted that Russia has installed facilities related to the ceremony and a heliport on its territory, while North Korea appears to have prepared fireworks to celebrate the event.

Russia's Tass news agency reported that the ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin set to deliver a message via video link. The North Korean Premier, Pak Thae-song, is expected to attend the ceremony in person.

The proposed 850-meter road bridge aims to enhance the flow of goods and travelers between North Korea and Russia, bolstering their cooperation in fields such as the military and economy. Currently, the two nations are connected by a solitary railway bridge linking North Korea's Tumen River and Russia's Khasan stations, which has been operational since August 1959.
