Milan: Short track speed skater Hwang Dae-heon has added another medal to his impressive Olympic collection, securing a silver in the men's 1,500 meters at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Hwang finished the race just behind Jens van 't Wout of the Netherlands, marking his second consecutive medal in this event after winning gold four years ago.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Hwang expressed his satisfaction with the silver medal, highlighting the significance of his achievement despite the challenges he faced leading up to the event. "This silver medal is still very precious to me," Hwang stated at the Milano Ice Skating Arena. "I am proud of standing where I am today after all that I've gone through."
Hwang's journey to this medal has been anything but smooth. After winning his first Olympic medal as a teenager in 2018, he became involved in a legal dispute with former national team member Lim Hyo-jun and was criticized for fouling and injuring another teammate, Park Ji-won, in international competitions. Additionally, a knee injury last November threatened to derail his Olympic aspirations, but Hwang arrived in Milan determined to compete.
Hwang is not done yet, with upcoming events in the men's 500m and the 5,000m relay. "I have more races left here," he said, emphasizing his commitment to continue receiving treatment and staying focused.
The 1,500m final, featuring nine skaters including South Korean Shin Dong-min, saw several competitors fall out of contention, providing Hwang the opportunity to make decisive moves. Despite a challenging World Cup season where he secured only one silver and one bronze, Hwang used the experience to fuel his determination. "I went through so many trials and errors during the World Cup season," he reflected, attributing his success to the hard work behind the scenes and his unwavering self-belief.
