Seoul: The Seoul city government announced plans to increase the fares for its Han River ferry shuttle service on weekends and public holidays starting next year. This decision aims to better distribute the costs associated with the service.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the "Hangang Bus" service fare is anticipated to rise from the current 3,000 won (US$2.17) to approximately 5,000 to 10,000 won on weekends and holidays next year. The announcement comes as the ferry service celebrates its first anniversary, having launched on September 18, 2025. Since its inception, the service has transported over 600,000 passengers across major points along the Han River, which runs through the capital.

The city government is advocating for the fare hike due to increased demand for the service on weekends. A city official mentioned that a final decision regarding the fare adjustment is projected to be made in April next year following public hearings. Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon also stated the city's intention to expand the service by increasing the number of piers and ferries, aiming to reduce waiting times to 15 minutes. Additionally, the city plans to introduce an express service to diversify the routes available.

The city government expressed its intention to evolve the ferry service into a form of public transit rather than merely a tourist attraction.
