Seoul: South Korea is set to make concerted efforts to strengthen its mutually beneficial ties with the United States amid growing policy uncertainties surrounding Washington's incoming administration, as announced by the nation's trade minister. Trade Minister Cheong In-kyo emphasized the importance of this relationship during a strategic meeting with key commercial attaches and senior officials from the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA). According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting, held to discuss strategies for maintaining South Korea's export momentum, highlighted the need to closely monitor policy developments under the new U.S. administration. Cheong stated, "We will closely monitor policy developments under the new U.S. administration and proactively address emerging challenges." Cheong elaborated on the robust alliance between South Korea and the United States in advanced industries and economic sectors, which has been strengthened through significant investments by South Korean compa nies. He noted that the supply chains of both countries are deeply interconnected, providing a strong foundation for seeking mutually beneficial partnerships and exploring new business opportunities. The trade minister also underscored the achievement of 14 consecutive months of export growth through November, despite challenging conditions such as shipping disruptions. He urged officials to continue their efforts to sustain this momentum. South Korea's exports saw a 1.4 percent year-on-year increase to US$56.3 billion in November, driven by robust semiconductor shipments. Meanwhile, imports declined by 2.4 percent to $50.7 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of $5.61 billion. The country has maintained a trade surplus for 18 consecutive months.
