Seoul Stocks Surge Over 3% on Chip Sector Rebound

Seoul: Seoul stocks ended their two-day decline with a significant rise on Tuesday, driven by investor interest in technology stocks. The Korean won also appreciated against the U.S. dollar.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korea Composite Stocks Price Index (KOSPI) surged by 231.68 points, marking a 3.56 percent increase, to close at 6,747.95. Initially, the index dipped during the morning session but experienced a notable recovery around midday, prompting a five-minute halt in program trading by the bourse operator.

Lee Kyoung-min, an analyst from Daishin Securities, noted that the rebound was primarily due to bargain hunting focused on semiconductor stocks. Despite recent declines in major players like Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, international investment banks have maintained a positive outlook on the memory chip industry, emphasizing its robust fundamentals.

Supporting this optimistic view, the latest monthly export data showed a substantial increase, with semiconductor exports rising by 180.6 percent as of July 20, setting a record for any July.

In broader market developments, Tehran acknowledged new mediation proposals from Pakistan and Qatar aimed at resolving tensions with the United States, which further boosted investor confidence, as highlighted by the analyst.
