Seoul Police Officer Indicted for Creating and Distributing Deepfake Videos

Seoul:A police officer has been indicted for creating and distributing deepfake videos using artificial intelligence, involving individuals he knew, according to prosecutors.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Busan District Prosecutors Office reported that the officer, who was stationed at Seoul's Dongdaemun Police Station, produced approximately 400 deepfake videos and distributed around 50 of them from March 2022 to August of this year.

The officer's arrest and detention were carried out by investigators from the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency after a prolonged undercover investigation that began in December 2025. This investigation was launched to confirm suspicions regarding the circulation of illegal, exploitative videos on Telegram.

It was also revealed that the officer had been investigated for a similar crime before he joined the police force, but he was not indicted at that time. In addition to the deepfake videos, the officer faces charges for possessing about 5,600 illegally filmed videos, including approximately 1,600 involving child abuse, and for producing around 10 illegally filmed videos using his mobile phone.
