Seoul: The decision to hold upcoming high-level trade discussions between the United States and China in South Korea underscores Beijing's confidence and trust in Seoul, as expressed by China's top envoy to South Korea.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Chinese Ambassador Dai Bing emphasized that the choice of South Korea as the venue for these crucial talks reflects a spirit of friendship and trust between China and South Korea. The discussions are set to take place between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. These meetings aim to lay the groundwork for a significant summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled later this week in Beijing.

"This is the fifth or sixth time we have held initial negotiations in a third country," Ambassador Dai noted, highlighting the importance of choosing South Korea as the location for these preliminary talks. The decision has sparked curiosity, especially as both officials are set to meet in South Korea rather than China, with Secretary Bessent making a brief visit to Seoul before proceeding to Beijing.

The upcoming summit in Beijing between President Trump and President Xi will cover various pressing issues, including trade and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, as reported by foreign media. When asked about the potential visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to South Korea following the summit, Ambassador Dai mentioned that both countries are maintaining open channels for high-level exchanges.

Ambassador Dai also remarked on the positive trajectory of relations between Seoul and Beijing, expressing optimism about the progress being made.
