Science Ministry Unveils Ambitious Plan to Lead Global Quantum Industry

Seoul: The science ministry on Thursday unveiled its road map to foster South Korea's quantum industry, aiming to become the world's top quantum chip producer by 2035. The Ministry of Science and ICT detailed a comprehensive plan that includes fostering 10,000 experts in the field and nurturing 2,000 businesses. The objective is to secure homegrown quantum technologies capable of delivering industrial breakthroughs, particularly by advancing the artificial intelligence (AI) sector.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the government will designate five locations by July to establish "quantum clusters" intended to spearhead the country's quantum transformation. Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon emphasized the transformative potential of quantum technology, stating, "Quantum technology is a formidable innovation that will determine a nation's competitiveness in the post-AI era." He further added that the government aims to mobilize national capabilities across various sectors to position South Korea as a global hub for quantum technology and industry through this comprehensive plan.

The science ministry has also signed a memorandum of understanding with U.S.-based quantum computing firm IonQ. The agreement involves the establishment of a joint research center in South Korea and an investment of US$15 million over the next three years. Additionally, major South Korean companies, including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and SK Telecom Co., have launched a quantum technology consultative body to discuss cooperation, as announced by the ministry.
