Science Minister Pledges Swift Action on Smart Glasses Regulation

Seoul:Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon announced plans to implement measures to address issues related to smart glasses, emphasizing the need for expeditious development of guidelines that are currently being prepared.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Bae discussed the matter during a parliamentary audit at the National Assembly. He was responding to a query from a lawmaker about the ministry's plans to tackle privacy violations and covert filming concerns associated with smart glasses.

Bae emphasized the importance of a coordinated response across ministries, highlighting that President Lee Jae Myung had raised the issue during a recent Cabinet meeting. He assured that while guidelines are in the process of being developed, efforts would be made to accelerate their completion.

Smart glasses, which integrate digital technology into eyewear, have become popular through brands like Ray-Ban by Meta Platforms Inc. However, their use has raised concerns in South Korea after incidents of academic cheating and illegal filming were reported. Other regions, including Norway, Australia, and the European Union, are also considering similar restrictions.

Data from Rep. Lee Jeong-heon of the ruling Democratic Party indicated that there have been three reported cases of illegal filming with smart glasses in South Korea this year.
