Samsung Plans Appeal Against $191.4 Million Verdict in OLED Patent Case

Seoul: Samsung Electronics Co. announced it will appeal a U.S. federal jury's decision that mandates the company to pay $191.4 million in damages over allegations of infringing organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display patents held by an Irish firm.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the verdict, reached by a jury in Marshall, Texas, determined that Samsung's range of products, including smartphones, televisions, computers, and wearable devices, violated two OLED display technology patents owned by Pictiva Displays. Samsung has refuted these claims and has expressed its intention to appeal the decision.

"We intend to appeal the jury's verdict that has ruled that the two patents were infringed upon," Samsung Electronics stated, highlighting their disagreement with the jury's findings. The South Korean tech giant is also actively pursuing a separate legal challenge, seeking to invalidate the disputed patents through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The lawsuit, initiated in 2023, is among several significant patent litigations targeting Samsung Electronics in Texas, a pivotal state for resolving corporate intellectual property conflicts.
