Kiev: A Samsung cellphone was found among the belongings of a North Korean soldier who was killed by Ukrainian forces while fighting alongside Russian troops, according to the Ukrainian military. Ukraine's Special Operations Forces (SSO) reported that the discovery was made during a raid in Russia's western front-line region of Kursk, where they killed two North Korean soldiers.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the SSO shared details of the raid through a Facebook post, revealing that the items captured included a mobile phone identified as a Samsung 2G model. The phone's design was recognizable from photos released by the SSO. In addition to the phone, the soldiers found printed materials with Ukrainian phrases transliterated into Korean, such as "Drop your weapons" and "Take off your clothes," indicating their intended use for capturing Ukrainian soldiers.
Among the possessions was a passport from the Republic of Buryatia, a federal subject of Russia, and a letter containing a New Year's message from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. In the message, Kim Jong-un expressed his support for the deployed soldiers, stating that he was constantly wishing and praying for their safe return.
The raid also resulted in the capture of military assets, including protective gear, various military equipment, a DL-5 rangefinder, a 1PN139-1 thermal imaging sight, and an AK-12 assault rifle equipped with a 1P87 sight, as reported by the SSO.
