Samsung, LG mulling to release new flagships on same day
SEOUL-- South Korean tech giants are seeking to start sales of new flagship smartphones on the same day next month, industry sources said Saturday, amid intensified competition in the global market.
Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. both earlier announced they will showcase their new flagship models later this month.
Sources said Samsung plans to start pre-orders for the presumed Galaxy Note 8 on Sept. 1 ahead of its official release in mid-September, with LG also considering a similar schedule.
Samsung plans to showcase the presumed Galaxy Note 8 in New York on Aug. 23, with LG also set to unveil the LG V30 in Germany on Aug. 31.
Industry watchers said it would mark the first time for Samsung and LG to release flagship models on the same day.
In 2016, Samsung started sales of the Galaxy Note 7 a month ahead of the LG V20. Earlier this year, LG kicked off sales of the G6 ahead of the Galaxy S8 smartphones.
The decision apparently came as release dates did not have significant impacts on sales of previous models, industry watchers added.
"As the two companies decided to introduce the smartphones on similar dates, it is likely they are seeking face-to-face competition," an industry insider said.
