Seoul: Unionized workers of Samsung Electronics Co. sent a letter to Chairman Lee Jae-yong on Tuesday, demanding the company improve the transparency of its bonus system.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the workers called for the adoption of a more transparent bonus evaluation method and the removal of the current framework based on economic value added (EVA). The union highlighted that while SK hynix recently decided to allocate 10 percent of its annual operating profit to its bonus program, Samsung Electronics continues to use the EVA method, which they claim lacks transparency.
The union's demands follow a recent tentative wage agreement reached by SK hynix Inc. and its labor union. Under this agreement, SK hynix will allocate 10 percent of its annual operating profit to a profit-sharing bonus program and will remove the cap that limited bonuses to 1,000 percent of employees' basic pay.
The union expressed concerns that, under the existing EVA-based system, employees could receive no bonuses even when the company reports significant operating profits, due to the presence of a ceiling on payouts. The union emphasized that although it may be too late to fully regain workers' trust, the company should at least demonstrate a willingness to implement changes.
