Seoul: The South Korean won weakened slightly against the U.S. dollar on Monday, as overseas investors continued to be net sellers of local stocks. The currency was quoted at 1,468.5 won per dollar by 3:30 p.m., reflecting a decrease of 1.9 won from the previous day.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the won began the trading day at 1,459.9 won per dollar. This initial strength was attributed to the easing of tensions in the Middle East, following reports that the U.S. and Iran had halted military actions. However, the persistent foreign sell-off of local stocks throughout the day contributed to the won's decline.
Moon Jung-hee, an economist at KB Kookmin Bank, noted that the won experienced pressure due to its short-term appreciation. Overseas investors sold a net 2.1 trillion won, equivalent to approximately US$1.9 billion, worth of local stocks on Monday. Despite this sell-off, the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index saw a gain of 0.97 percent, closing at 6,755.75 points.
