Seoul: The South Korean won experienced a slight gain against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, influenced by the recent dollar selling activity by SK hynix Inc. This change follows SK hynix's recent listing in the United States.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the won was quoted at 1,415.9 won per dollar at 3:30 p.m., representing an increase of 2.5 won from the previous day's close of stock trading. This marks the strongest level for the won since October 2 of last year. The currency opened at the same value and reached a high of 1,412.2 won in the afternoon trading session.
Analysts have noted that the won's rebound is largely due to substantial dollar inflows after SK hynix converted proceeds from its American Depositary Receipt (ADR) offering into the local currency. SK hynix raised approximately 40 trillion won (US$28.2 billion) through its ADR offering on the Nasdaq last month and plans to invest most of these funds in South Korea.
Additionally, foreign investors purchased a net 44.2 billion worth of local stocks during the latest trading session. This activity contributed to a 0.73 percent increase in the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index, which closed at 6,345.53.
