S. Korean Football Chief Chung Mong-gyu Reappointed as EAFF President for Third Term

Suwon: South Korean football chief Chung Mong-gyu has been appointed as the president of the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) for the third time, as announced by the Korea Football Association (KFA). Chung, who has led the KFA since 2013, will serve as the EAFF president until March of the following year.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Chung was unanimously elected during the sixth EAFF Extraordinary Congress held in Suwon, approximately 30 kilometers south of Seoul. Suwon is one of the three venues for the ongoing EAFF E-1 Football Championship. Chung initially assumed the role of EAFF's interim president on March 30 and secured the full presidency during the recent congress. His previous leadership terms at the EAFF were from February 2013 to March 2014 and from March 2018 to April 2022.

The KFA stated that it is customary for the football chief of the EAFF E-1 Football Championship's host country to assume the EAFF presidency, with each term lasting four years. China was initially scheduled to host the 2022 E-1 Championship but withdrew due to COVID-19 concerns. Du Zhaocai, vice president of the Chinese Football Association (CFA), was appointed as the EAFF's chief in 2022 but resigned in 2023, three years before his term ended.

Japan Football Association President Kohzo Tashima succeeded Du and led the EAFF until March, when Chung took over. With China scheduled to host the 2028 E-1 tournament, Chung is expected to hand over the EAFF presidency to the CFA's head next year.
