S. Korean and French Firms Commit to Strengthening Ties in Bio and Technology Sectors

Seoul: South Korean and French businesses on Friday pledged to broaden their collaborations in key emerging sectors, including biotechnology, carbon-free energy, and technology, as both nations look towards the 140th anniversary of their diplomatic ties in 2026.

According to Yonhap News Agency, prominent companies from both countries convened in Seoul for the Korea-France Business Dialogue for Our Future. The event was hosted by the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) and coincided with French President Emmanuel Macron's inaugural visit to South Korea since assuming office in 2017. Macron participated in the event alongside the Movement of the Enterprises of France following a summit with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung earlier that day.

The conference saw the presence of Prime Minister Kim Min-seok and approximately 300 officials from government and business sectors within both countries, as stated by the FKI. The South Korean delegation featured leaders from major conglomerates such as Samsung Group, SK Group, Hyundai Motor Group, and LG Group. Meanwhile, the French delegation comprised chief executive officers from Air Liquide, Sanofi, and Quandela.

During the dialogue, business officials from South Korea and France examined strategies to enhance cooperation in three significant emerging industries: biotechnology, carbon-free energy, and artificial intelligence (AI). FKI Chairman Ryu Jin emphasized France's role as a vital economic partner that shares the values of liberal democracy and has consistently supported South Korea.

The event led to the signing of 12 memorandums of understanding between South Korean and French businesses. Notably, one agreement involved Kakao Healthcare Corp. and Sanofi collaborating on AI-based solutions. Prior to the forum, President Macron participated in a tree-planting ceremony on the rooftop of the FKI headquarters in Seoul, commemorating the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
