Seoul: The government on Thursday expressed "deep concern" over ongoing unrest in Iran, stating its opposition to the use of force against peaceful protests. Up to 12,000 people are estimated to have been killed in the Iranian government's crackdown on protests sparked by economic problems.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the foreign ministry expressed its worry over the situation, noting the numerous casualties and the instability in the regional political climate. The ministry emphasized that the South Korean government is against any use of force against peaceful demonstrators and expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing situation.

The ministry further mentioned that it is closely monitoring the safety of South Korean nationals in Iran. It is committed to implementing protection measures for overseas nationals in case local conditions worsen.
