Seoul: South Korea, the United States, Japan, and eight other countries have issued a joint alert regarding North Korean information technology workers who are accused of generating revenue to support Pyongyang's weapons of mass destruction programs.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the alert was released jointly by the relevant authorities of 11 countries, urging nations, companies, and other entities to enhance their understanding of North Korean IT worker schemes, implement measures to address them, and strengthen countermeasures such as improving identity verification procedures.
The alert from the U.S. State Department highlighted that North Korea relies on skilled IT workers deployed globally to use false identities and earn income to fund the country's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. These workers reportedly impersonate nationals from various countries to secure employment and income through online platforms managed by private companies.
The alert further emphasized that North Korean IT workers aim to secure contracts with the intent of sending their earnings back to their North Korean agencies. They pose insider threats to companies and are involved in activities like data exfiltration, cryptocurrency theft, and the theft of sensitive information. The workers are said to utilize increasingly sophisticated methods, including AI integration, to conceal their identities and broaden their activities internationally.
The joint alert stressed that all U.N. member states are obligated to repatriate North Korean nationals earning income within their jurisdictions, with limited exceptions, as per a U.N. Security Council resolution. Additionally, engaging with and paying North Korean IT workers for their services may breach the domestic laws of several countries, including Japan, the United States, and South Korea, leading to potential legal or financial repercussions.
The countries involved in issuing the joint alert included Britain, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
