Seoul: South Korea's presidential artificial intelligence (AI) committee announced plans to create a task force aimed at enhancing AI cooperation with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This initiative is a follow-up to recent bilateral agreements made during a summit between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the task force will be co-led by the presidential secretary for AI policy and future planning, along with the vice chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). The primary objective of this team is to set up a joint public-private implementation system, facilitating the partnership with the UAE and presenting substantive investment projects by the end of the year.

The task force will be organized into five working groups, each managed by relevant ministries such as the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy. These groups will focus on key sectors discussed during the Seoul-Abu Dhabi summit, where both leaders emphasized the importance of joint investment, development, and marketing within the AI sector.

The summit resulted in the signing of seven memorandums of understanding (MOUs) aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation across AI, energy, and defense industries. Under a strategic framework agreement, South Korea will join the UAE's Stargate project, which seeks to develop AI and energy infrastructure collaboratively.

The UAE's Stargate project is focused on constructing a network of AI data centers in Abu Dhabi, starting with a 200-megawatt facility expected to be operational next year, as part of a larger 5-gigawatt AI campus initiative.
