S. Korea decides to purchase PAC-3 MSE interceptors
SEOULSouth Korea’s military on Wednesday endorsed a plan to purchase dozens of enhanced U.S.-made missile interceptors as part of efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities.
Its defense project promotion committee approved the plan to introduce the Patriot Advanced Capability (PAC)-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) interceptors, starting in 2021, through a government-to-government foreign military sale (FMS) program.
One PAC-3 MSE interceptor costs around 6 billion won (US$5.34 million).
The South Korean military currently operates the PAC-3 CRI (cost reduction initiative) interceptors with a range of some 20 kilometers. The PAC-3 MSE has a range of around 40 km.
Reports say that the U.S. Forces Korea also plans to upgrade its existing anti-missile program with the PAC-3 MSE.
