Seoul: South Korea and the United States are likely to initiate a regular consultative meeting as early as next week to enhance their coordination on North Korea policy, diplomatic sources revealed on Friday. The allies are exploring avenues to reengage Pyongyang.

According to Yonhap News Agency, diplomatic authorities in Seoul and Washington are organizing for Jeong Yeon-doo, vice minister for intelligence and North Korea's nuclear issues at the foreign ministry, and acting U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Kevin Kim to launch the regular consultative meeting next week. Although the exact date is yet to be finalized, next Tuesday is a likely possibility.

Reports indicate that Seoul and Washington have agreed on the necessity of such a regular channel to facilitate timely consultations on North Korea-related issues. A coordinated policy stance is deemed crucial as both countries aim to resume dialogue with Pyongyang.

Once the meeting is established, it is anticipated to concentrate on refining the pace and direction of the allies' North Korea policy. This comes as the Lee Jae Myung administration prepares for comprehensive peace-making efforts toward North Korea beginning next year.
