S. Korea and U.S. Discuss Potential Warship Deployment to Hormuz

Seoul: South Korea and the United States are actively engaged in discussions regarding Washington's request for Seoul to dispatch warships to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil corridor. A senior aide to the South Korean president confirmed this ongoing communication on Monday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee Kyu-yeon, who serves as the presidential secretary for public affairs and communications, addressed the situation following a social media post by U.S. President Donald Trump. In the post, Trump urged South Korea and four other nations to contribute naval forces to counter Iran's moves to potentially block the strategic waterway.

Lee emphasized that any decision on this matter would be preceded by thorough discussions between South Korea and the United States, highlighting that both nations are maintaining close communication. However, he did not provide specific details about the communication channels being used.

When questioned about whether a formal request had been made by Washington, Lee stated that Cheong Wa Dae is working to ascertain the "exact intention" behind Trump's comments. He noted the importance of confirming the official stance of the U.S. government before any decision is made.

On Sunday, Cheong Wa Dae highlighted its intention to carefully consider its response to Trump's social media post, underscoring the significance of protecting international maritime routes and ensuring freedom of navigation as matters of global concern.
