S. Korea and U.S. Consider Expanding Defense Cooperation to Include Military Aircraft

Seoul: South Korea and the United States have recently explored the potential for broadening their cooperation in naval shipbuilding and maintenance to encompass military aircraft, as reported by South Korea's defense ministry. This development emerged during the Korea-U.S. Integrated Defense Dialogue (KIDD) in Washington last week, where both nations committed to enhancing their alliance and achieving mutual security objectives on the Korean Peninsula and throughout the Indo-Pacific region.

According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea presented its capabilities, technologies, and determination to the U.S., which welcomed the proposal. The South Korean ministry's written briefing highlighted the discussions on maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) and shipbuilding. Additionally, South Korea proposed expanding naval MRO cooperation to include shipbuilding, and both parties agreed to pursue MRO cooperation for aircraft.

During the recent meeting, the allies reaffirmed their shared goal of achieving the "complete denuclearization" of North Korea and expressed significant concerns about North Korea's advancing nuclear and missile threats, as well as its illegal military cooperation with Russia. The importance of continuously strengthening combined drills against North Korea's threats and exploring ways to enhance extended deterrence capabilities through the Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) was emphasized.

The establishment of the NCG followed the April 2023 summit between former President Yoon Suk Yeol and former U.S. President Joe Biden, aiming to reinforce the credibility of the U.S. extended deterrence commitment. Both nations also confirmed their dedication to the systematic and stable transfer of conditions-based wartime operational control (OPCON) to Seoul and sustaining the momentum of trilateral security cooperation with Japan.

The KIDD meeting, held once or twice a year since its inception in 2011 as a comprehensive senior-level defense meeting, marked the first such gathering since U.S. President Donald Trump assumed office in January. The talks took place amid efforts by Seoul and Washington to strengthen their naval shipbuilding and maintenance cooperation.
