S. Korea and France Sign MOU to Support Korean War Veterans

Seoul: South Korea and France have entered into a preliminary agreement to enhance cooperation in supporting veterans of the 1950-53 Korean War, as announced by Seoul's veterans ministry. Veterans Minister Kwon Oh-eul and Catherine Vautrin, Minister of the Armed Forces of France, took part in the signing ceremony for the memorandum of understanding on veterans affairs cooperation.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the agreement outlines cooperation between the two countries in collecting and sharing records of France's participation in the Korean War. It also aims to ensure respect for war veterans and their bereaved families and to establish a commemorative facility for deceased war veterans. This memorandum follows a letter of intent signed by the two agencies to collaborate on veterans affairs earlier in 2023.

During the Korean War, France deployed 3,421 army and navy personnel, resulting in significant losses, with 269 soldiers killed and 1,008 wounded. The agreement seeks to honor and support those who served and their families, acknowledging the sacrifices made by French forces during the conflict.
