Seoul: The floor leader of the ruling Democratic Party (DP), Representative Kim Byung-kee, stepped down from his position on Tuesday following increasing allegations of misconduct, such as receiving preferential treatment and abusing his power.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim announced his resignation during a party meeting at the National Assembly. He issued an apology over the allegations, which include using complimentary accommodations provided by Korean Air Co. in the past and other alleged misconduct involving his family.

"There were acts that fell far short of the public's common sense and point of view, and my shortcomings are entirely responsible. I truly apologize," Kim stated. He emphasized that his resignation is not an attempt to shirk responsibility but rather a commitment to taking greater responsibility after discerning right from wrong.

Kim further explained that his decision to resign was also intended to prevent any additional burden on the ruling party and President Lee Jae Myung's administration. He had been under pressure to resign after the allegations came to light, which also include claims of instructing aides to assist his son with his work and accusations against his wife for misusing district council funds for personal purposes.

Kim's resignation arrives 200 days after he assumed the role of the ruling party's floor leader.
