Ruling party to pick new floor leader, parliamentary speaker candidate next month

SEOUL, The ruling Democratic Party will hold internal elections next month to pick its new floor leader and its candidate for parliamentary speaker, party officials said Friday.

The party's election management panel reported to its decision-making Supreme Council that polls for the floor leader and National Assembly chief posts are set to occur on May 11 and May 16, respectively.

The new floor leader will replace Woo Won-shik, whose one-year term ends next month. Possible candidates being mentioned for the whip post include Reps. Cho Jeong-sik, Hong Young-pyo, Kim Tae-nyeon and Noh Woong-rae.

Six-term lawmakers Moon Hee-sang and Lee Seok-hyun and five-term lawmakers Park Byeong-seug and Won Hye-young are being bandied about as possible candidates to replace current Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun.
