Seoul: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday referred to South Korea as an "indispensable partner" in a message celebrating the 81st anniversary of the nation's liberation from Japanese colonial rule. His remarks highlight the ongoing collaboration between Seoul and Washington in fields such as defense, shipbuilding, and critical minerals.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Rubio's statement was part of a press release marking Korea's Liberation Day, where he represented the U.S. government's stance. He emphasized the enduring alliance between the U.S. and South Korea, which has been based on shared values, mutual trust, and a steadfast commitment to each other's security and prosperity for over seven decades.

Rubio mentioned that the relationship between the two nations has entered a "historic new era" following the state visit by the U.S. President to South Korea last fall. He noted that this visit has further strengthened cooperation on various issues, including economic security, critical minerals, and shipbuilding. The visit in question involved a summit between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump, held in South Korea ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
