Seoul: Rival political parties are preparing for a confrontation during a plenary parliamentary session on Monday, as the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) aims to introduce a reduced budget bill for 2025, facing strong opposition from the ruling People Power Party. According to Yonhap News Agency, the proposed budget, endorsed by the DP at a recent plenary session of the parliamentary special committee on budget and accounts, sets the nation's 2025 budget at 677.4 trillion won (approximately US$485.3 billion). This figure represents a reduction of 4.1 trillion won from the government's original proposal. The cuts impact the budgets for special activity expenses of several key government offices, including the presidential office's secretariat, the national security office, the prosecution, the state audit agency, and the police. Moreover, the government's reserve fund of 4.8 trillion won is to be halved to 2.4 trillion won. DP leader Park Chan-dae has described the bill as a "drastic measure" intended to "normalize" the country's livelihood. This move is part of the DP's broader strategy to prevent tax cuts for the wealthy and reduce the budgets of influential state agencies. In response, the ruling People Power Party is expected to convene a general meeting of its lawmakers to formulate a strategy to counter the DP's initiative. In addition to the budget bill, the DP plans to introduce impeachment motions against Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI) Chair Choe Jae-hae and three senior prosecutors from the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office, including its chief, Lee Chang-soo. This marks an unprecedented move to impeach the head of the BAI within the National Assembly. The DP's actions stem from Choe's refusal to honor a parliamentary request for documents related to an audit of the presidential office's relocation, a move aligned with President Yoon Suk Yeol's campaign promise in 2022. Furthermore, the DP has accused the prosecutors of not indicting first lady Kim Keon Hee despite allegations of h er involvement in stock price manipulation. The impeachment motions are scheduled for a vote in the Assembly's plenary session on Wednesday.
