Seoul:Violations of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act fell to the lowest level last year since the law was enacted a decade ago.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission reported that violations of the act had reached a peak of 4,386 cases in 2018, but declined through subsequent years. Last year, a record low of 1,280 cases was recorded.

Since the law's implementation, a total of 17,455 violation cases have been reported, resulting in 2,983 people being penalized. A survey conducted by the commission in June revealed that 87.1 percent of respondents viewed the law's effectiveness positively. However, 61.4 percent expressed a desire for stricter enforcement.

Jung Il-yeon, chairman of the commission, remarked that the decrease in violations and punishments indicates stable operation within public institutions.
