Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended his congratulations to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on his reelection as chairman of the State Affairs Commission. Putin expressed his hope for the strengthening of bilateral relations between Russia and North Korea, as announced by the Kremlin on Monday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim Jong-un was reappointed to the highest position of the commission during the first session of the Supreme People's Assembly held on Sunday. This marks his third consecutive term since the commission was established in 2016 as the top policy guidance body of North Korea.
Putin conveyed his message of congratulations through a statement on the Kremlin's Telegram channel, addressing Kim as "Dear Comrade Kim Jong Un." In his message, Putin recognized Kim's personal contribution to the friendly and allied relationship between the two nations. He emphasized the importance of continued close cooperation to further develop the comprehensive strategic partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang, which serves the fundamental interests of both countries.
In recent years, Russia and North Korea have been enhancing their ties, including the signing of a mutual defense treaty in 2024. Additionally, North Korea has provided troops to support Russia in its conflict with Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, in a press briefing on Monday, mentioned that Kim Jong-un has a standing invitation to visit Russia. Peskov noted that Moscow "will always be happy" to welcome him. Once the dates for the visit are confirmed through diplomatic and other channels, the visit will take place.
Putin had initially invited Kim to visit Russia after their summit in Pyongyang in June 2024, and he reiterated the invitation when they met in China in September last year.
