Prosecutors Demand Death Penalty for Seoul Stabbing Rampage Suspect

Seoul: Prosecutors on Tuesday demanded the death penalty for a stabbing rampage suspect who killed a complete stranger and injured another at a supermarket in northern Seoul in April. The demand was made against the 32-year-old suspect, named Kim Seong-jin, during a hearing at the Seoul Northern District Court.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim was indicted for killing a woman in her 60s and injuring another woman in her 40s during his stabbing rampage at a supermarket in Mia-dong, northern Seoul, on April 22. He committed the crime after opening the packaging of a knife on sale at the supermarket. Kim and the victims were not acquainted.

"Kim stated that he committed the murder to go to prison. It is difficult to expect him to be reformed or have his humanity restored. The court should show that the law is alive by banishing him from society forever," the prosecution said at the hearing.

The sentencing hearing for Kim is slated for Aug. 19.
